The genre of dacoit sagas has eventually become extinct in the Indian cinema. Where we got to watch films like ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’, ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’, ‘Mother India’ and ‘Sholay’, we later got a few like Shekhar Kapur’s ‘Bandit Queen’, Om Puri’s ‘China Gate’ and Aamir Khan’s ‘Mela’. But in the 21st century, this genre almost was coming to an end when Abhishek Chaubey, the director of ‘Ishqiya’ and ‘Udta Punjab’ thought of making one in his next. And for this one, he has zeroed down on Sushant Singh Rajput and Bhumi Pednekar, who’ll play dacoits in the film.
We’d got the news of Sushant’s involvement in this film back in May. But Bhumi is a new addition to this movie which is based in Chambal – dacoits favourite hunting ground – in the 70s. A report in a famous daily quoted a source saying, “Like Sushant, Bhumi too plays a dacoit. She plays his love interest and gave the nod a month ago. The film will be shot in the Chambal ravines and will roll early next year. Abhishek and his team have already begun scouting for locations.” The movie will go on floors in the year end and the makers plan to finish it before March 2018.
Along with the director, Sudip Sharma is writing the movie, who had earlier said, “Some of them have more than 80 murder charges on them. Everyone has heard horror stories about the dacoits of Chambal but I’ve realised the reality is quite different from what Hindi films portray. We aim to capture that reality.”
The film is to be produced by Ronnie Screwvala.
