It’s a big disappointment that Shah Rukh Khan is not performing on top of his power yet he was returning to his comfort zone. Here’s our movie review of Jab Harry met Sejal.
Jab Harry Met Sejal
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Rating: 2 Out of 5
There’s a mixture in Imtiaz Ali’s earlier movie “Love Aaj Kal” in which Saif Ali Khan was the lead character who was crossing the same path as SRK in this movie. From Love Aaj Kal we got Imtiaz Ali’s way of showing the importance of love and the right partner in life. Fine let’s move inside the story of Jab Harry Met Sejal.
Shah Rukh Khan plays the lead character named Harinder Singh aka Harry as a tourist guide. This character starts where Jai leaves. The irritating thing is, SRK never truly explored his character as he was a tour guide in that movie and this skill was deep inside him. In the entire movie, he’s not someone who wants to be taken seriously. Some hints are also there which proves that he is running away from something.
Anushka Sharma aka Sejal Jhaveri is one of Harry’s client who stays behind her tour group to find her lost engagement ring. Sejal is a talkative girl who lived a protected life that has restricted her from her really living. Slowly she found her Jordan in Harry, to whom she calls “Hairy”. Actually this is how a highly educated Gujarati girl used to talk who also belongs from a well-to-do family. She has confidence issues which gets problematic for her. For an example, she thinks that it’s fine if a goon kidnaps her and tries to take advantage of her. She says, “Unko toh at least waisi lagungi na main”… Here ‘waisi’ refers to ‘HOT’.
Sejal’s immaturity attracts Harry a lot and then he decided to be her protector. Harry says, “Tum us type ki ladki ho hi nahi”. The slow build-up provides sufficient time to Shah Rukh Khan to showcase his typical “Loverboy” skills. He keeps on swapping his expression between “I am angry till you say something cute” and “Tum nahi jaanti Sejal, kuch kuch hota hai”.
There is a back-story too, but that is so irrelevant as trying to find the depth in this movie. Jab Harry met Sejal forces dialogues and scenes in such a way that a song could refer. Why not directly play the song? After all, the musics drag more attention in this movie.
On the other hand, he doesn’t seem like Imtiaz Ali’s film. Where is that second realisation of those characters who want to run away from Love? The entire story is based on a search for a Goddamn ring. And there is a terrible angle involving Chandan Roy Sanyal and his gang. We don’t want to spoil your fun, but you can relate this twist with Love Aaj Kal.
On the other hand Anushka Sharma is even more clueless. She tries to look cutely silly desperately whenever she is not mouthing dialouge like, “Main waisi ladki nahi hoon jo apni engagement tod degi.”
Jab Harry met Sejal is absolutely predictable. It’s a big disappointment that Shah Rukh Khan is not performing on top of his power yet he was returning to his comfort zone. Here’s our movie review of Jab Harry met Sejal. Pritam’s songs have done some patch work. But nothing can rescue this 143 minutes exhausted storytelling. I didn’t find what I was seeking. Did you?
