Bring your heart along to watch this film, said director Imtiaz Ali, and so I did. Looking at how Imtiaz has always given us soul-searching characters, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal‘ will not disappoint.
The story starts with a beautiful location of Europe and enters Harinder Singh Nehra as Harry (Shah Rukh Khan) with all his wit around the tourists showering them with his undying charm. If you’re going to expect a typical tour guide who only speaks monotonous descriptions of the places and is hardly interesting, you’ll love how Shah Rukh gives a new side to his character. Sejal Jhaveri (Anushka Sharma) is shown as she’s always seen in almost all her movies – talkative, lively and spontaneous. The only difference being, her Gujarati accent, which honestly sounds very fake. The way Sejal meets Harry in the first sequence will remind you of Kareena Kapoor’s character of Geet from ‘Jab We Met’.
Like the storyline has always described, Sejal is in search of her engagement ring which she thinks she’s misplaced it in either of the places that she traveled to in her Europe trip. And the journey of searching her ring begins with going to her engagement restaurant to art museum to cafes and more. Harry always tries to either convince her to take a flight back home or to explain her about him being a womanizer. But since Sejal is very firm on her decision of finding her ring, she neither gives up on her search nor on Harry.
There are moments in between the ongoing story, where Harry falls weak and that’s where we realise how he’s feeling hollow from within and is himself on a constant search of something. And just when he’s trying to subside his emotions, Sejal comes to his rescue and makes him feel less lonely. But unlike every other Bollywood film, this film doesn’t show the male character trying on his female lead. Instead, it goes the other way round where Sejal is trying to free Harry from restraining himself from flirting with her.
If you’re an Imtiaz Ali fan, you’ll get to see a lot of resemblance from his love story films like ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Love Aaj Kal’ and ‘Tamasha’ in ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’. Where one character is shown as flamboyant which complements the other silent one. All the dialogue sequences have beautifully covered locations. K.U. Mohanan’s cinematography is excellent and is the highlight of the entire film. Screenplay becomes a little dull in the second half but doesn’t disappoint. The music looks abrupt, but there are a couple of them which will make a mark in your heart and you know exactly which ones are those. Aarti Bajaj has done a wonderful job at the editing and it moves in a smooth transition.
Talking about the performances, Shah Rukh Khan is extraordinary, while Anushka looks best with what she does when given such roles, minus her Gujarati accent. The chemistry that Shah Rukh and Anushka share is something that has worked for this soul-searching theme of the film. This movie revolves around these two characters and hence other characters aren’t given as much importance. It is a predictable story where eventually both the characters fall in love with each other and live a happily ever after.
If you’re looking for another classic like ‘Tamasha’, this one doesn’t hold that level of intensity and substance. But if you’re purely going for some entertainment package, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ is sure a watch!
