The month of August was both good and bad for Bollywood. As this month, we find a superstar failed while other one brought glories for Bollywood. This month also communicated valuable lessons for all the stars that at this present time, the audience is only and only interested in the content of the movie and nothing else.
I should say that those days are gone when star laced glossy movies, made lavish money at the box-office regardless of the narrative. SRK’s Jab Harry Met Sejal results are the indication that viewers are slowly distancing themselves from stardom and concentrating on the story. Even Salman Khan couldn’t divert the throng towards the theaters.
The next thing which made this month a case-study is the word of mouth. If your movie is awful then social media will kill it forever. And if the story, concept strike the chord then only your movie can flourish at the box-office. WOM is that potent weapon that lies in the hands of the viewers and nothing can be done about it.
Sorry, I guess that needed correction… if the filmmakers can try to present a ‘GOOD MOVIE.’ lLet’s discuss why August is the month of lessons for Bollywood:
Winners of this month
I guess that is pretty crystal clear. Akshay Kumar’s movie ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ has won many hearts and we all know how! This movie was supposed to make a good money as the buzz was just great and Akshay is on the top of the box-office. As the movie earned 100 Cr and became the 3rd highest grossing movie of 2017. Within 3 days profit was seen as the movie was made with the budget of 20 Cr and had already earned 51.45 Cr by its first weekend. Also, this movie helped Bollywood to get out of the slump that’s been eroding it for a while.
Next came Bareilly Ki Barfi and viewer was sold. The small town story makes connections with people in such a great way that it has already become a hit. And Babumoshai Bandookbaaz was the only movie that managed to present swag and that too not only on screen but also at the box-office. It took 2 days for the movie to recover all the investments and now we can see this movie in the column of one of the hits of 2017. And the credit goes to Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the whole cast of the movie.
Despite being rooted firmly, this movie was declared a hit for earning just slightly over Rs 10 Cr
Losers of this month
It is painful to see SRK’s movie in this category. Though his movie Jab Harry Met Sejal had a good buzz but failed at the box-office. Having the most romantic hero SRK, the director Imtiaz Ali who can handle the relationship deftly audience was pretty pumped up about the movie. But the bad storyline messed it all and awarded SRK with a flop.
And this happens only if you take the audience for granted. JHMS became a big disappointment.
The same case was with A Gentleman. As much attention was diverted for the presentation rather than the content. But it has managed to make a decent budget and we can say that A Gentleman will survive.
This month taught a lesson to Bollywood and that is, Word of mouth can make and break movies. On one side, it killed JHMS and on the other side, it made BKB and BB into a hit. And now the time has come when filmmakers should concentrate on the content of the movie rather than the leads for the movie.
As we all know that at the end only the content is getting consumed more than gimmicks. And if Salman and SRK couldn’t give Rs 200-300 Cr movies then there is something seriously wrong with the way filmmakers are thinking. As the audience is more inclined towards the content oriented movie like BB and BKB.
No doubt Akshay Kumar will take the top spot. He is enjoying the best phase of his career and has managed to figure out the way to make his audience as well as the people who invest in him, happy. On the other hand, Rajkummar Rao is performing his usual thing.. Wowing everyone with his talent. Bareilly Ki Barfi wouldn’t have been half if Rao wasn’t part of it.
Looking forward towards the next month
September has a good line-up of movies like Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Baadshaho, Daddy, Bhoomi, Simran, Judwaa 3, Newton and Haseena Parkar.
So let’s just wait and watch.
